Pretty much this.
Every male kid calls other kids "fag" "homo" etc. just kidding around boy talk, and if they get a reaction they like, then they often continue the teasing.
NP and it bears repeating that every male kid does not do that. Wtf how do you think this is normal?!
You've never been around much then. Because it's normal and common. Maybe they just clean up their act around you.
You keep insisting it's normal and common and multiple people are assuring you that your casual homophobia is not at all common. Did you ever consider that it's normal and common only because you're the one constantly doing it?

Uh, it is normal and common. Middle-Aged-Moms-of-DC might be clutching their pearls, but I guaran-fckin-tee you that this is situation normal in locker rooms and hallways among the boys of the hoi polloi.
But are they calling each other "queer" in front of their Bernie-bumper-sticker Subaru-driving moms? No.

My kid is only in 4th grade but the boys play a game where they say whoever does x first (talk at lunch, move on the recess, walk down the hall) is gay. DD first encountered the game at lunch and told them to stop and to stop using gay as an insult. Then they turned on her and were like, you must be a lesbian. To her credit she said that it wasn’t their business if she was and doubled down on telling them that it wasn’t an insult and to stop using it as one. These are 9 and 10 year olds!
The worst part is that she said teachers were standing right there and heard the entire exchange. And she says it happens other places where adults look the other way. As long as adults are too embarrassed to interrupt this behavior and call it out, it’ll persist.
Well yeah, she broke the social rules by interjecting herself into other people's business and scolding them.
That's considered an attack basically, to tell other people how to behave, and obviously the other kids would see that as an opportunity to tease her, because she gave a reaction they wanted by being offended. If she behaves like that as an adult, she could wind up really hurt, talking physically.

You, my friend, are a terrible person. And a Republican, I assume. “Just watch out for yourself” is a horrible mantra.

No, “every male kid” does not do this. Jerks do this.
No. They really, really do not. Your attitude demonstrates why there are still people who do this, and are so casually dismissive of behavior that is abusive. Your anecdotal experience however does not negate my experience, or the experience of other PPs.
Sure they do. Some more than others, but they all do at some point growing up. Even many grown males still do it, I'd estimate probably 40% or more.
