Oxymoron.

Have you never been to Europe? Asia? I've had some exceptional free breakfasts at hotels overseas before. They are nothing like a Quality Inn free breakfast. Also if you have high status with chains like Marriott or Hilton and stay at the higher end properties, they have amazing free breakfast buffets.

Embassy Suites are great. It’s not the Ritz, but rooms are spacious and for a free breakfast, it’s pretty good.

It depends on the trip. If it's just an overnight stop on the road, I'll look for a Fairfield Inn, Springhill Suites, Holiday Inn Express, Best Western Plus, etc. For those stays, I want
- Free breakfast
- Clean, highly rated
- Free parking
- Fitness center
- Hot tub, if possible. It really helps after a long day of driving.

If I'm overseas...
I'll usually pick a highly rated Marriott property as I have high status with them.
- Central location within easy walking distance to a train station or attractions
- Free breakfast and Lounge access (for free breakfast/dinner aps, beverages, coffee)
- A/C!
- Good shampoo/conditioner so I don't need to bring my own
- Hair dryer
- Fitness center

Location, in a safe community, also for beach it should be oceanfront or short walk distance, the hotel itself should be at least 3 star under a good hotel chain ( again for safety issue). Love to have complimentary breakfast.

We stay in two types of hotels depending on the trip. Both types must have extremely strong reviews online (for the type of hotel they are.)

Type 1 - Resort hotel. This is for when we want to luxuriate and relax, often at a beach, etc. In this case the hotel often IS the destination, even though we may venture out some here and there. This is often where we used our accumulated travel points as we can get the best value per point here.

Type 2 - City vacations, family visits, college visits, theme parks, pit stops on the way somewhere else, funerals, etc. For this we just pick the highest rated Hampton Inn/Holiday Inn Express/Hyatt Place/etc. that is in the location we want. We just want a clean place to sleep, shower and eat breakfast before we leave for the day. Not planning to spend much time at the actual hotel.
