It's all over the place and completely subjective. Also, is the coach just looking to fill out 10 or so slots from the 10th graders that moved on to varsity or actually being open minded to pick the best 30 players? Then, how do you possibly evaluate 100-300 players at "try outs" that consiste of small-sided scrimmages over a few days?
I know a rec player who never made JV much less their varsity soccer team at a large HS in fairfax county, yet they made their college's club soccer team and was starting freshman year. It's not the main college team but some college club teams are loaded with players who could have played college soccer or at a minimum were high level travel players and HS players who just don't want the bigger commitment of playing for the college team but are content with club ball. Another local rec player was called into his country's youth national team camp for GK. Kid never made the HS teams.
