I don’t have a sense of Thiel, but one advantage of having Vance instead of Trump is that Vance is far less likely to be idolized. Whatever it is that people are attracted to in Trump — Vance ain’t got it. The people who are genuinely in favor of Trump’s agenda is a lot smaller group than the ones who, unaccountably, just like Trump. Also, the reality of some of Trump’s decisions is starting to hit people in the red states, and they are voicing their concerns at Town Halls. Vance laboriously explaining why the hospitals and colleges — often the largest employers in a town or even a state — are closing while tariffs impact people’s lives is not going to go over well, even with a MAGA audience.
