That's not true. You think just because you can afford a $2M house (which isn't that much for this area), the tax savings of where you live and the cost of college no longer matter? Top earners still care about how much they spend and try to maximize their budget. You are confusing UMC with the ultra wealthy (who still care about the cost of their taxes)

OP, M’am or Sir (want to treat you with respect because if your budget is $2M you must be important), go with Virginia.

Also, isn’t it funny how a more “red” state (ok maybe call it purpose, but redder than MD) is in such better shape economically?

I do like Potomac though. There, Bethesda, and maybe Chevy Chase are probably the only areas in MD I’d ever consider living in, and none of those are as nice as many areas in VA.

Commuting along residential streets choked with traffic and with many lights isn't any better. You will be tempted to take highways anyway.

I live in Bethesda and have family in Falls Church. I personally prefer Bethesda, and all of my neighbors are down-to-earth and kind. They will deny it, but that describes Bethesda and McLean. You can tell by the snobbish responses from those two places. The one above implying Arlington have a superiority complex… like I said above, both Bethesda and McLean are visually nicer than both Arlington and Falls Church. Bethesda has a real housewife of Jersey feel to it as far as attitude, McLean attracts a lot ( though not the whole area ) rich foreigners who lives behind big gated mansions and keeps to themselves. Both people from those areas are quick to call Falls Church and Arlington ugly and inferior. You cannot say anything positive about those two places without them jumping in to attack. Oftentimes, they’re comparing the rich area/neighborhood in their county to the whole of Arlington and still coming up short as far as overall quality of life for families, young professionals, retirees and others. Like said, in my previous post, Bethesda and McLean are nice attractive places, however, based on your criteria, I would pick Falls Church as the overall best option for quality of life. You’ll have quick access to Arlington amenities and the Tyson’s area, even Oakton and Vienna, and again, very nice places to live.

You're kind of nuts and, yes, with all the silly stereotypes you are definitely giving off an "inferiority complex" vibe. You really seem to want to push Arlington although OP didn't ask about it, and then your fallback is to recommend Falls Church more because it isn't Bethesda or McLean than because of what you actually know about FC.

Plenty of folks in both Bethesda and McLean know their neighbors well.



You’re right, I love Arlington and as links above demonstrates it is considered a great place to live with a fabulous lifestyle. As I’ve said, McLean and Bethesda are pretty places to live, however, people there are extremely snobbish and isolating. There’s an over focus on house prices more so than other areas in the DMV even upper NW. You guys are obsessed with status and very much not community oriented like, Arlington and Falls Church. With a 2M, OP would be considered, “the poors” by many in Bethesda and McLean. The inferior complex is not with Arlington from my perspective. Comparing your neighborhoods or a small area of your county to a whole county with a population 5 times+ larger is ridiculous. As exemplified in the many links above, Arlington is often ranks in the top of places to live for quality of life. To recap, I would pick Bethesda and McLean and if status and flaunting are OP’s main concern, Falls Church for community, family and overall quality of life and 2M she will not be considered, “the poors.”


How exactly does this manifest itself in Mclean and Bethesda when there are so many multifamily and TH communities where people pay even less than OP's budget? Are you saying that if you live in a condo/TH in any of these areas you are looked down upon? And how does "being looked down upon" manifest itself exactly? If you are a new person in the neighborhood and moved into a new construction 4+ mil home, do you really think people will just run to you with pies and cookies to say hi, vs. if you move into one of the older fixer upper properties there? Not how it works. People meet each other in other social settings like school, church, at work, etc. OP will meet people in her synagogue and they are likely going to be living in various neighborhoods and not necessarily near her. Ditto with school connections her kids will make. She will likely become friends with some parents and they won't necessarily even live anywhere near her area or care about her status in her neighborhood in relation to her neighbors.
