All the college towns in FL are blue. The MAGA parts of NC and FL are similar. The amount of anti-Florida bias on here is ridiculous. I guess even educated people are fooled by dumb memes online.
Ron DeSantis is the governor and he’s the one that controls the school’s funding and administration. No thanks.

Austin is very blue. It is silly that you would completely discount a 4 year opportunity over something like that. It makes you as close-minded as the people you disdain.

My daughter was accepted at UF and chose UGA (both oos to her). Let me tell you her reasons, if this is the kind of info OP was asking for...
We did not care for Gainesville - very humid and in the middle of nowhere.
Did not like that not all freshmen live on campus. This was important coming from oos that all freshman would have a somewhat similar experience, but when dealing with schools who have a substantial amount of people off campus, that doesn't happen (also a problem at UT Austin).
Did not like that a lot of the classes at UF were online especially in early years. Maybe that has changed.
I am convinced that she would have been happy at UF. But if you are getting to pick between multiple good options, this one just wasn't the top.
I do think UF is better for pre-med than schools that don't have a local med school. The research, teaching, shadowing opportunities much better in an environmen like that.
UF has a lot of school spirit and traditions. The whole homecoming thing at UF seemed really fun.
She was completely unfamiliar with UF Rush and had no contacts at all, versus she had many contacts at UGA. This was not the main factor, but as it turned out, rush went very well at UGA and maybe would have been difficult at UF. Before anyone criticizes, this is not why she chose UGA, but if you are asking for things that went through the mind, this is one....and being able to find a group (whatever that group is) does relate to your overall experience at a college when you are going somewhere that you know no one.
UF has a very nice campus.
You can't go wrong. These are some of the considerations that were discussed in our house. we discussed.

I mean you don't have to go far out of Gainesville to find the true backwoods of Florida. Ocala is just something else. They've had cults and serial killers linked to the Ocala National Forest, which is between Gainesville and Orlando.

Absolutely true, I have had lots of counseling to deal with my rough upbringing, and the difficulties that I had to overcome to have a life in the DMV. would not recommend Florida for that reason, as you’ll be going to school with my peers from similar backgrounds
You are still stereotyping a state you left 20+ years ago and kids you have never met. I'm in FL and I'm not sure what a "redneck striver" is. Everyone I know is from outside Florida/outside the US.
Why in the world do you think I left 20 years ago? It’s true, but I still go back and have family and friends there. It’s not like it’s had a renaissance - the people who are moving to Florida post pandemic are of similar type.
Maybe you know Miami? That’s a different state entirely than the rest of Florida, which is more Mississippi and Georgia
Floridian here. The state has changed a ton. The areas where most people live are nothing like Georgia, let alone Mississippi.

Is there a reason why you choise to fly into Orlando v. Jacksonville? Also, from the airports, do your kids just Uber to UF or does the school provide a shuttle?
Jacksonville is similar to Baltimore so some people prefer to avoid it. There’s a red line bus service going from the north of the state down to Miami and stopping at major cities (the stops vary but usually either the airport or a college campus) that tends to be popular with college kids.

One of the reasons UF is so strong is the bright futures program. It basically guarantees high achieving kids here a tuition free place at UF (well, any Floridian university, but UF is clearly above all the others) if they meet some requirements regarding gpa and community service hours. For example, my own kids will either go to an ivy (they have very good chances) or UF. There’s no reason for us to consider anything else. I think many families here are in a similar situation. And Florida is just becoming more and more popular, with more professional families moving here in recent years. I think the reputation of UF is already solid and will only improve over time.

So you hate your family and friends ad keep socializing with them and reinforcing your negative bias without seeking new experiences? I think you also would have to define what types you are talking about because I still don't see it unless this is some sort of an anti-southern bias. I'm not in Miami btw.
