There has to be another mechanism for funding research. Obviously there's private corporations doing research. What kind of private foundations fund research and how do we get more money to them ?
You have to get away from any money that Trump can get his hands in so that you can do some proper research.
Private research does almost zero primary research…it’s just not a feasible use of private funds to throw billions at say 10 different wild theories on how to create sustainable nuclear fusion.
A country needs to decide if primary research is in its best strategic interests or not.
China and Russia certainly believe in it.
Many decades ago IBM had its Watson lab that was more of a free floating research lab. I think it’s dwindled down to nothing along with most of IBM’s R and D. Private equity and Wall Street don’t want to invest in research that may take decades to pay off, or may end up being a dead end. It’s really sad to think that America may stop being an engine of ingenuity because that is what has driven out success for the past 200 years, since at least the cotton gin.

Internships are being cancelled. Many agencies pulling them, stopping applications, and putting notices up on websites. Even if they are unpaid and still available many are going to suck because people are so demoralized, confused about what they can and can’t do, and soon to be overworked. Soo much winning.

Yes.
And this is why voting for Harris/Walz was so critical. They weren't ideal candidates on all fronts, and it was a truncated campaign, but they were a hundred million times better than these corrupt men in office now.
Try to get through to the remotely sane Republicans in office who still have a conscience and backbone.
But also throw some money NOW into Dems who are running for Senate and House in the mid-terms in 2 years. We need to take back our country.
+1 Read yesterday that in just a few days, 2/3 of Trump's actions align perfectly with the goals of Project 25. Harris' campaign and surrogates warned us repeatedly about this. And it was met with a collective shrug from half of the electorate.

Blame the Dems for running an idiot.
The R’s “could” have run someone towards the middle but choose not to. That means they didn’t want a candidate in the middle. Either they didn’t believe having a candidate in the middle would win or the candidate they backed is doing exactly what they want. They also in theory “could” govern in the middle because they have control of the government and have tech billionaires backing them but again have chosen not to.

My high school kid was getting ready to apply for an unpaid internship with MITRE, with a vacancy announcement that was supposed to be open until Feb. 10, but that announcement (along with the parallel college announcement) has been pulled down. Anyone know if this was a result of the spending freeze/uncertainty regarding government contractors?

The new budget bill and tax cuts will widen any income imbalances.
It really is comical that the vast majority of Harris voters (you know…people with money) will end up dramatically better off financially than Trump’s voters.
At some point it becomes clear that losers in life will always be losers in life…it’s not due to immigrants or federal workers or whichever boogeyman you want to pick.

It wasn't half who voted for this current President, it is more like 25% of eligible voters.
He only got 49% of those that voted.
Half of eligible voters were non-voters and stayed at home. And their kids are losing opportunities and our social security and other services are being lost.
