This. This is their official policy. It's worked for my family several times. They won't seat both parents together without a fee, but will either do 3+1 or 2+2 for free. Seats are usually in the back.

How is it United’s fault that OP failed to select seats (for free) back when she booked?

We’ve used other airlines (including super crappy ones like frontier). When not choosing seats, their systems force an adult next to a child. Agree OP should have been more careful about seat selection but United also needs to update their system.

We pay for seats together AND we have status on AA. Sometimes we get upgraded to first, but other times, our flight gets changed without our approval, and we’re seated separately. If AA does this, United probably does too. It’s not the people at fault. It’s the IT system. Needs to be fixed pronto. No one wants to sit next to unattended children, and no parent wants children unattended.

We tried to get seats together but plane was full. So when we boarded we asked someone to switch, but then the FA was upset about it.

This was not United Basic, just standard economy which used to include seating together etc. what happened did they change planes and I lose my seat assignments— can you always select seats at booking I can’t see why I didn’t but it was six months ago…

Ok, you should have paid for seating together. Not right to expect others to trade who paid for their seats. Your 8 year old will be ok. Or, ask to be put on a different plane. Your failure to plan is not someone else's crisis.

Maybe you are okay leaving your children with random strangers in the dark. But we aren’t. Airlines shouldn’t require extra expense for basic safety of minors

This exactly. In this case a thirteen year old was viciously assaulted.
You’d think airlines would minimize opportunities for perverts to commit sex crimes against minors. But, no, not at all. Evil, evil, evil.

I have told my kids (especially my girls) if flying and not sitting next to me, if someone touches them at all to start screaming and press the flight attendant button immediately. I’ve stressed they should not be embarrassed to do this. I would he really unhappy with being separated from them on a red eye.

It’s such a pain to get all the way through booking including entering birthdays and everything and then realize there are no seats together! I want to see the seats available before I choose which flight.

You can see this! When you choose a flight it says “see seats” right away on Delta.

Same with United. I am always able to look at the seats before I’ve even chosen the flight.

+1. I always do this. It is easy to do on the United website.

This is not true. I bought standard Economy tickets and there was still an upcharge for good seats. The only seats that were available to me (booked 4 months before the flight for a random fall weekend) were the two last rows and middle seats. If we'd wanted seats together in the middle of the airplane, we would have had to pay extra.

The text you quote was true as written.

You say above "upcharge for good seats" which is an *option* - so very very different from having a mandatory charge to reserve ordinary economy seats.

Seems like United wants to encourage children get assaulted by creepy men looking for easy targets.

Actually you can. It’s called upgrading yourself and leaving them behind in economy.
