Willow has been a beautiful name for a long time - it certainly had nothing to do with the very strange Smith duo.
I think some of you are struggling with comprehending the purpose of the thread. It's about a name receiving a surge in popularity due to the influence of entertainment it's not saying the name never existed before it appeared in X show or was used by X character/celebrity. Comprende?
It;s also meant to be fun and lighthearted so remove stick from arse.

It became popular in the early aughts due to Friends
Get over yourself ,love. It's laughable you think Jane Austen is peak sophistication.
Hardly. It's just been around for well, centuries. As has the name. Maybe you're just a moron and you don't read books.
Oh FFS. Yes, the name Emma has been around for centuries, but it's well documented that Rachel Green naming her baby Emma on Friends sparked its recent extreme popularity.

"The episode aired in May 2002, and while we can’t say definitively how much it affected parents’ choices, it more than likely boosted Emma’s appeal. In 2001, the name ranked No. 13 on the SSA’s popularity list, but in 2002 it jumped up to the fourth most popular name for girls. In 2003, Emma was No. 2, and it’s been in the top three every year since."
Not pp but it was already on a steep upward trajectory.
I think a lot of these examples are backwards and the pop culture name came from a rising popularity name.
Often names are cyclical and the grandparents' and great grandparents' generations name start to feel fresh to the procreating generation.
+1 although there are exceptions (Splash -Madison, Love Story-Jennifer)

most of these are the shows/movies following the existing trends. I already knew a couple baby Emmas when the Friends baby was named. It had already had strong growth in popularity

You knowing a couple of people with the name prior doesn't change the fact that the name became widely popular due to Friends. Why do some of you have to be so insufferable?
I just don't buy it, no matter what the Huffington Post says. Why would someone name their kid what a character on a TV show named her kid at the very tail end of the show? Emma wasn't even a character.
It happens all the time pp, it's why we have kids named Addison, Hermione. Danaerys etc. Maybe you wouldn't e inspired to name your kid in such fashion but people take inspiration from their baby's names from all sorts of places

Isabella/Bella - Twilight
Emma - I honestly think it has less to do with Friends than with Emma Watson, Emma Stone, Emma Roberts
Olivia - same as above: very visible celebrities with the name
Elena - Vampire Diaries
Ava - Reese Witherspoon's daughter
Charlotte - Kate Middleton's daughter
Violet - Ben Affleck's daughter
Isla - Isla Fisher
Sienna - Sienna Miller
Charlotte was popular before that.
Charlotte is a very old name but became more popular with some moms because of the character on Sex and the City.
Right—not because of the BRF.
It definitely did in some instances, same with George and Louis. Two things can be true

I associate it with the character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the 90s in terms of pop culture references, rather than Willow Smith. I definitely know some Gem Xers with kids named Willow and they are way more likely to have been inspired by Buffy.
