We live in a neighborhood with kids that go to several different schools and the ones who wear a lot of makeup are the girls that go to the "prestigious" privates. They usually have mothers who are younger and very well put together.

Wait, if this was in the evening and the makeup was truly heavy, then maybe the girl had come straight from a dance audition or theater rehearsal or something similar. My DD does figure skating competitions and theater and has sometimes had to be somewhere after/before auditions, rehearsals, or performances without a chance to wash off performance makeup or apply it later.

Anyways, it's not "a thing" just because you saw one probably kid doing it.

I haven't seen any. The fresh face look seems to be in, so any makeup is pretty light.

Makeup washes off so I don’t think it’s something to be stressed about. As bad/cringy/provocative appearance choices go, it feels like the least problematic. It doesn’t reveal anything and it’s totally temporary. So honestly it feels like a zone to allow experimentation to me as a parent. I don’t have to like something to allow it.

My mom thought it was too young, but then I reminded her that I started wearing makeup in 6th grade too lol. Back in the 80s, it was way more garish (blue mascara!).

+1 my mom gave me my first eyeshadow palette in 5th grade - blue eyeshadow! - and I LOVED it. The entire point of makeup in middle school is garishness tbh. I still love makeup and I always credit my mom for being wise enough to judge that makeup in middle school is fun and not for “sexiness” or looking adult.

I think for girls who have acne makeup can be a game changer. It covers up acne and scarring and redness.

Totally agree. This is a silly troll. I have seen boatloads of sixth grade, middle school girls. None of them look like they have too much makeup on. But yes, by the end of 6th, a number of them were wearing some sort of light makeup. In seventh, they step it up a bit. And the eighth graders are wearing the same makeup as high school girls. But the vast majority of them still look perfectly lovely even in high school. The gift of YouTube means they are a millions times better at putting on makeup as teens than any of us were in the 80s or 90s. And current makeup looks are not particularly outrageous. Some day, I’m sure they will all start wearing dayglo electric eye shadow, but virtually no middle or high school girl is doing that right now. A light glittery eye shadow is about as “wild” as I’ve seen.
