People around this did this to my kid all the time.
It was both said and unsaid, such as the awkward pause when they mentioned their school, or the side comment that there was no way they would let their kid apply to X school,not realizing I or my kid was in earshot.
My out of state family member was appalled by the casual disdain in this area for kids attending less prestigious schools.
