Our regular mechanic insists on keeping the car for days for any type of service, including a simple oil change, and I didn't want to be without the car for days. Oil changes are what Jiffy Lube does, so one would think they would know how to do it right...
The car is possibly out of commission for a couple of weeks while they figure out the extent of the damage, and DW and I disagree about how to proceed (that's a bit of an understatement).
Someone give me some hope.
Please. You need to take your car to a real certified mechanic not some "shade tree" idiot down the street. No legit mechanic shop could stay in business unless they were able to turn around oil changes same day (perhaps with an appointment in advance but those are easy enough to get).
Everyone has heard stories of catastrophic engine failures as a result of someone they know taking the car to a "quick lube" place and a mistake of this kind being made by a brain dead imbecile.
It IS your fault.

That is their defensive mechanism. They are so afraid of messing something up that all of the mistakes are yours, that way nothing can ever be their fault or screw up.

Anonymous wrote:Actual OP here -- Couple things.
1. I'm a woman. It's 2024.
2. The oil light never went on until the car died.
3. The disagreement over what to do next is about whether to let Jiffy Lube fix the car or take to another mechanic.
4. I am doing everything I can do right now, which is wait for Jiffy Lube to get the results of their oil test and tell me what they think is wrong with the car. I'm taking the car to another mechanic on Monday for a second opinion (they're closed on weekends).
5. DW has come around a bit since last night. She admits she reacted out of frustration because we can't do anything over the weekend and she feels powerless to fix the problem. She was "mad at the situation, not at me." Although it didn't feel that way.
Thanks to those who agreed DW's reaction was unfounded. To those of you who still think all wives have husbands and all men are emotionless babies: Wow.

Real men change their own oil. It isn’t hard.
Ludicrous notion. This is far from the truth. Few people change their own oil.

This is the real issue here. What do you disagree on?
Just a hunch that he probably expects DW to drive him around for a few weeks and he won’t get on Jiffy Lube’s ass to get the car fixed.
He needs to man up and get Jiffy Lube to get this done promptly AND pay for a rental car. He’s probably being passive and hoping things will just work out.
I feel like OP is framing this as “DW is mad at me for Jiffy Lube messing up” when the reality is DW is mad because OP isn’t doing anything about it and expects DW to deal with it.
