Violent crime in Maryland is overwhelmingly committed by U.S. citizens but Hogan for some reason has this laser like focus on the tiny percentage of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. Make no mistake, Hogan is Trump in sheep's clothing.

Yeah, um, there isn't much of that anymore. I also don't think a junior Senator is going to "bring home the bacon". However, if Hogan at all supports the GOP vision of Project 2025, it would decimate the government sector of Maryland. I also care about appointed positions, Supreme Court justices, and passing legislation. We don't need another Susan Collins.

To the PP who suggested this is too big a leap. She's not governing -- this isn't an executive position. She basically will sit on committees and hearings and vote along party lines with her colleagues. It's not THAT hard. Even Vance is capable of this!

House of Representatives, Illinois Senate, managed a sports team as part owner, and Trump, well, he was made fun of. First lady. Various (no political office). It's about who is the competition, too. The way it works is like this: Trump nominates Judge Cannon for the Supreme Court. Senator Hogan hems and haws and expresses concerns and misgivings. If his vote is needed, Hogan comes under immense pressure and eventually caves. If his vote is not needed, Hogan is given permission to vote no to show how “independent” he is.

This process is called “The Susan Collins”.

A lot of MAGA types in my Maryland neighborhood hate Larry Hogan for being insufficiently MAGA. I wonder if the number of Republicans abstaining or voting libertarian will have a significant effect on this Senate election.

Hogan was effective as a moderate governor who was able to provide a seawall against a Democratic dominated legislature.

If Hogan were to win the election he would create a Republican majority in the Senate (assuming that WV will turn red with Manchin's retirement). He would become a junior member of the majority coalition. He would not have zero effect on curbing the majority opinion. He would not have any of the power he had as an opposition governor with a veto vote on the legislature. He would become a part of the waves. And as a party coalition member, he will find that the party is stronger than he is. If he tries to buck the party, he will find himself committing political suicide.

Manchin had power as a senior senator with a lot of political power, influence and committee assignments. Plus he had a lifetime of political debts owed to him. That's how he had the political capitol to be a maverick. Hogan would be more like Marjorie Taylor Greene in the House. She's vocal, but her resistance to the party has gotten her stripped of virtually any committee assignments and influence. She's a voice and she gets her one vote, but otherwise, she's powerless and inconsequential. She burned up what little political capitol she had in the first few months of becoming outspoken. Hogan would have even less political capitol and would become a waste. I can guarantee that unless he toed the party line, he would be able to do nothing for Maryland.

Alsobrooks being part of a Democratic majority would be able to get more done for Maryland as a Democrat than Hogan could achieve as a Republican. And this is all after you consider the impact of a Republican majority on judicial approvals and the potential for up to 3 justices on SCOTUS needing to be replaced during the next administration.
