No dog in this fight at all, we live in fairfax and my kids are young, but i agree this is messed up. I was prepared to disagree with the poster because spots are earned and this is the rule, but reading more, i agree the rule should change. Spots should only be open to 8th graders on freshman teams.

Precisely the point and why an eighth grade club volleyball player should stick with club and allow kids who want to play for their high school that they actually attend- play. And this isn’t just about volleyball it’s all the sports. You have kids doubling and tripling up on club, rec, high school teams … while others are never even given a chance to play.

wasn’t there a movement to not allow ECNL soccer players to play high school sports?

13-year-olds shouldn’t be on a high school JV team when there are only 12 spots.

And shame on the coaches for enabling this.

ITA. This is when many Sophomore/Junior players start recruiting and the JV high school coaches
should have used more common sense.

Lololo. Colleges don't look at JV players for receuiting.

If you are junior on JV, you aren't getting recruited. If you are a sophomore and not on varsity, you probably aren't getting recruited.

They should have to earn their spot from an appropriate pool - students at their school. Not students brought up from other schools or programs in the district. Not wunderkids from middle school who may not even play at that school in a year.

Yes, these kids using APS as a launchpad to play at Visi.

The best kids from the appropriate pool. I don’t see any reason why the pool should be open to 8th graders, unless you live in the country and can’t field teams without expanding to 8th grade.
All the people who are fine with 8th graders haven’t convinced me of any reason it should be allowed, other that it’s already allowed.

While I agree with you that it should NOT be allowed, the fact of the matter is that it IS allowed. While you and I are in agreement, the rules are such and coaches have to follow rules. What I am hearing is that some people are telling coaches to ignore the rules. That's not a good idea.

The rule does not dictate that you MUST take 8th grade players. It says you "may". Coaches have latitude to make choices.

that word "may" is open to a lot of interpretation, and lawyers may think otherwise, LOL... No, I am not a lawyer. Schools don't want to be sued, if the 8th grader happens to be a POC.

Is this Yorktown?

Reports are that this happened this week. Several sophomores/juniors cut from JV and replaced by 8th and 9th graders. 9th, okay I get it. But 8th? Put them on the freshman team.

There is a group of 8th and 9th grade girls that are very good at VB and soccer. Many of these girls are also on that really good flag football team. Watch out for this to happen in soccer in the spring as well.

The Arlington middle schools have soccer teams so they can’t tryout for the high school team

No worries, those girls tried out for field hockey instead.

It's still pretty subjective and open to favoritism no? It's not like swimming or track.

This 💯. As a PP said, in VB there tends to be a couple of standout players on each team and the rest are all subjectively equal or solid contributors. It’s not like swimming or track where there are time trials. There is a lot of room for subjectivity and favoritism. There can be several players all around the same competency level and then what? This is why there should he a preference for students actually enrolled at the school.

The 8th graders get introduced to a lot more older teen behaviors doing this as well. I have heard from parents of kids about this in the past.

Are these coaches PE teachers or are they paid part time just to coach volleyball?

It depends on the school. At our HS they are coaches paid just to coach volleyball - one us from a local club, one is from
Another club, and one is a teacher in the district at another school and another academic subject.

It depends. These are extra-duty assignments, and I think there might be a preference for internal candidates (already cleared background checks and in the personnel system). There are vacancy announcements here:

https://apps2.winocular.com/arlingtonps/workspace/wSpace.exe

So, a PE teacher could end up coaching HS volleyball. A club coach could also end up in that position if they apply and are selected for the position. My kids play other sports at APS high schools, and have had both club coaches and teachers as their HS team coaches.
