Airplanes are just about the last place I mask but I do because it seems every time I caught covid was on a plane, and it at least seems to cut down on colds.

But it’s also true that very few people are masking

Why would people be masking on a plane?

Well, I could be on your flight, and I don't fit either category. I mask because I am not dumb.

I make all my health decisions based on what everyone else is doing. Thanks for starting the convo OP!

We carried and used N95 masks when we found ourselves stuck in very long and crowded lines for passport control at our departure airport in Europe. No spacing between people, and inevitably some were coughing. Didn't mask on the aircraft itself, judging the risk to be somewhat lower in business class with greater spacing between passengers, and because aircraft cabin air filtration is said to be relatively effective.

Only a handful of people were masking on our flights to and from Europe. We did not and I did get COVID on the flight home. No one else in my family did.

Yes, but only because I caught covid on a long flight and it was bad enough that I'm frightened. It isn't really rationale, so much as emotional.

No. Very few people were wearing masks on our flights to and from Italy this summer.

Okay, I’m the op and this made me laugh.

I travel domestically for business and had noticed the same thing, but the big covid uptick spiked as soon as summer vacation started and families started traveling more…especially abroad. I haven’t masked for my business travel in May/June, but I’m planning to mask up for our family vacation to Europe.

This is how I feel and I don’t otherwise mask anymore except in doctor’s offices where sick people are likely. But so many people I know who are otherwise not people who would knowingly spread around Covid have flown with Covid because they need to get where they are going. So I just feel the risk on planes, airport shuttles etc…is higher. And as others have said, I just don’t like getting sick - Covid, a cold, whatever
