I'm honestly surprised by this question . . . I was flying on airplane by myself at 13. I think there's a reason kids are afraid to get their drivers licenses and live at home well into their 20s these days; we've got to keep increasing how much autonomy we give our kids. An enclosed park with security is a no-brainer to me.
I flew across the country when I was 8 years old but it was a different world then.
I tend to think things were riskier back then. When I arrived at the airport my sister wasn't there to pick me up. I had to find a payphone, know how to use it and my parents' phone number, etc. Now our kids can call or text us from anywhere.
We've just needlessly changed our culture to be super conservative about what we let kids do in the real world, and far too lenient about what we let them do online.
