Then how do they buy $1 mil homes?
Trust fund
Not usually in Takoma Park.
Absolutely in Takoma Park. The majority of the activists/hippies remaining are trust fund kids. They don’t need to work, they are removed from reality and are looking for purpose.
75-year-old trust fund "kids", if so.
Right, kids (sons/daughters) of wealthy parents who have trust funds. Lots of them Takoma Park. They don’t need to work and can just be activists all day. They also don’t have a sense of reality.

But it’s not at all representative of the community as a whole.
Signed TP resident of 15 years
This is true and false. Those white collar families chose to live with the hippies because they enjoy it and mostly agree with them.
Nope. People live in TP because it is close-in, has good schools and nice neighborhoods. Signed, moderate (if not center-right) and very happy TP resident.
This is hilarious. Silver Spring exists.
Exactly, I am one of those « normal » upper middle class families and I def chose takoma park because of its leftist reputation, values/politics AND the old hippies. I love the vibe, the quirkiness, and find Takoma torch website hilarious. TKPK has a soul and is a unique little town. I hope it stays this way and people don’t come only for the convenience

The weirdest thing to me was always how obsessed people from Takoma Park are about living in Takoma Park. It is some weird superiority. They also all believe they live in some super diverse bubble but all the homes are now selling for well over 1M so.... a lot of white liberals who are delusional about what TKPK has become.
So where are the Millenial/Gen Z who would've been buying in Takoma Park 20-30 years ago currently buying/living?
