So few people send sympathy cards that I think that the recipients would be grateful for anything.

I really dislike greeting cards, whether cheap or expensive, with their vacuous messages. I feel bad but these get tossed. I feel most everyone tosses these types of cards. So what is the point.

Been experimenting. Sometimes I just make a nice gift tag, or I collect pretty blank note cards and have my kids draw something special inside. This last idea seems to work well—have gotten enthusiastic feedback about it.

One year on my birthday my mother gave me a beautifully wrapped little box, and inside it was a necklace that I already owned.

Then she gave me a birthday card still wrapped in the plastic “in case you want to reuse it.”

Then she collected the box and wrapping paper to reuse later.

Your post reminds me of this.

My sister assumes people don’t remember gifts already given and would dig deep into our parents’ closet and regift a tie or whatever she found.

My mother also would save gift wrap, reused ziplock bags, was a coupon clipper, I never had real Barbies or Oreos or new toys. Used to dislike her thriftiness but now I admire it. Saves money, less waste that goes in our landfill.

Buy in bulk - there are lots of cute independent places that sell them online these days (or at markets or other places). I pick them up along the way and have some for birthdays, thank yous, etc. They're cute and not made by Hallmark.
