I’m wondering why students choose French as their foreign language. It’s not a widely spoken language.

Can students who take a high school language actually have a conversation with a native speaker? The US has the most dismal foreign language education. They start too late and the minimal amount of hours is just not enough to become fluent. (Except for the people who have an innate ability to pick up languages easily.

No kidding. 1/3 of Princeton is engineering majors. The majority of the rest are STEM and Econ/finance wannabes. Surely your son fits into one of these categories, hence his insight.
