I think you answered your own question. He is a classic case of "abandonment" by father. He can't be alone, that's not how he works.

He needs to have a relationship with an entirely private, non-celebrity woman who doesn't want children but is happy about his family arrangement and who can match him in the intellect dept. He's just not meeting those kinds of women because they are so few in Hollywood.
I thought he seemed pretty happy with that SNL producer woman for a good few years.

It’s obvious Ben really was affected by his dads story and he’s inherited his father’s similar issues while completing his dads dream of being a famous actor and writer
His brother Casey has a ton of problems too. Addictions, etc. Family genes and childhood trauma.
+1 Genes can be very problematic.

I don't know how you could have an opinion on something like this either way. Did she ever love him? Does he love JLo? Does JLo love Ben? Does Garner love her current boyfriend? Truly an impossible question for anyone as far removed as we are to answer. Maybe even impossible for someone close to these people, but at least then it would be a much more informed guess.
Based on my own experience, it is hard for me to imagine having three kids with someone and not feeling love for them. I'm sure it's possible, there are sociopaths in the world, it's just hard for me to imagine.
I think some people get married because they think they should and/or want a family. I just got the feeling that that was why and that it was never a romance. Of course I don't know, and I don't think he's a sociopath. It's all speculation. He strikes me as someone who was on the rebound from an intense relationship (JLo) and Jen G seemed stable and a good partner. I think people marry for these reasons all the time. When they broke up, I got the sense that he was incredibly relieved and he's not that nice about her when he talks about her, whereas she said in Vanity Fair thar he was the love of her life. It's jusr a feeling I get. I don't think JLo loved her husband's either. Maybe Marc Anthony.
He was relieved because he was an addict and in the throes of his midlife crisis--drinking/gambling/cheating--and she had to be 'the nag'. They had children. She was doing all the work and protecting them. I see now the ease they have in paparazzi videos at kids' events, walks they take together, talks in the car and I think it is one of the realizations of you don't know how good you had it and did not appreciate it. Jen is the one that visited him in rehab and pulled him through. She is the stability. She seems like she has a huge heart and a good sense of humor. When you break something with such awful betrayal/addiction--it's hard to go back.

I think he does. And I think his family/childhood trauma and addiction gene had a lot to do with why he used the poor coping skills that he did---cheating/drinking/gambling.
I think at heart he is a good guy. He was very, very close to Matt Damon's dad who he felt like was his dad. He took his death very hard.
He clearly has loyalty to his friends and I as co-parents---Jen & Ben seem to be doing well. They look happy to see each other at kids' events and support one another. I'm guessing that really didn't sit well with J-Lo either. Likely always felt second best since he chose to marry Jen and have 3 kids with her.

I feel sorry for him. I really do. I never want to meet or talk to the guy, don't get me wrong. I just think he's got some bad stuff going on. And I like his movies a lot. I mean I hated him in Shakespeare in Love, but his later, more recent movies are terrific.
