Penn State is a wonderful place. IMHO, the UP campus and surrounding mountains, are so much more beautiful than UVA.

State college has a vibe. Not so much UVA.

Some people out west know about UVA, but I don't think it's all that highly regarded by most Californians, not like it is in the DC area, which is fine. It makes sense that a state school is more highly regarded in the region than outside of it. Only schools like Cal, UCLA and Michigan probably have a high national profile.

Outside the DC bubble, people don’t know Cal on the East Coast.

Whatever your petty squabble…that’s just not true. Now most know it as Berkeley.

How do you know this? Plenty of people know UVa and hasn’t heard of Cal. They’re provincial, just like folks that don’t know UVa

I mean hard to really know, but here's a couple of lists:

Berkeley #7
Penn State #13
UVA N/a

Berkeley #3
UVA #19

Berkeley #5
UVA: N/a

You don’t get it. Outside of your college obsessed bubble, people don’t look at lists like this.

I don't really care about such a list, either. But, I was responding to the poster who claims outside of the east coast, most people have never heard of Cal.

And when California posters stated that they either haven't heard of or disregard UVA, the UVA booster claimed the Californians to be "provincial".

I guess people all over the world, outside the east coast, are provincial, and only those who know about UVA are sophisticated.

Let's say your kid wants to go into sports medicine. Which would you pick?

I am a VT alum, but this is just not true. Come on.

I don’t think people in CA are thinking about UVA. I went to school in Boston and was not familiar with UVA until I moved here. DH went to Yale and there was one girl from UVA who was at Yale for grad school. I think she was the first person I met from UVA. I thought nothing of UVA meaning she should have said she went to Iowa or Kentucky and I would also have thought nothing of it.

We live in NOVA and realize it is a state gem and well loved. I also know you need a 4.5 gpa to get in. That doesn’t mean people in CA or MA feel the same.

And you are, what, 50 years old? Much has changed.

They won the basketball NCAA championship in 2019. It’s one of the hot school for my nieces and nephews at private schools in Boston & Connecticut. And the whole Reddit thing— I think Cali has heard

Actually, UVA is known just as much for being the first team, ever, as a #1 seed to lose to #16 seed UMBC.

I remember that more than the NC.

Of course. this is exactly what happens in the DMV bubble.

Yes, for most who don't major in STEM.

For that set of bright kids, hands down Penn State. For all others, and esp. prestige seekers, UVA, no question.

Why do we care what Californians think about UVA?

You don't have to care, but someone was talking about "name brand recognition", so that's where California residents come in.

UVA has a great regional reputation, that's for sure. But, it doesn't have that same cachet west of the rockies.

Way different feels to both. UVA is more preppy and southern. Penn State is more tailgate/school spirit and not preppy.
