We also wanted to share important updates on previously announced steps being taken to enhance the safety and security of our campus and neighboring communities. While the overall number of robberies in our area has decreased over the last year, we are continuing active measures to reduce crime, including:
Strategic Operations Center — UCPD is developing a strategic operations center to allow greater monitoring and analysis of crime and crime trends, and real-time adjustment of law enforcement resources.
o UCPD has already implemented the first stage of this work and it is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
o The Strategic Operations Center has already helped to solve crimes by analyzing footage from University security and license plate reader cameras to assist the Chicago Police Department in determining robbery patterns. In some cases this allows UCPD to respond within minutes if a vehicle involved in a crime enters the area. This technology helped UCPD in apprehending suspects believed to have been involved in robberies that occurred in 2023.
o UCPD is also using data to strategically place officers in specific locations to decrease crime.
All this blah blah blah and yet where were they when the girls was being robbed at gunpoint? Nowhere. They were exactly as useless as that guy who was sitting there watching.

The female victim was wrong because she fought back. Could have been killed. She should have just given up her cell phone.
She’s still bad ass. Watch this young woman. She’ll do great things. Looks like an athlete.
You also don't know how you'll react until it happens. I once had my wallet stolen at Union Station. I chased the guy down and made a big scene confronting him and there happened to be a Metro policeman who heard and who came running. The thief handed me my wallet back and ran. The thief wasn't brandishing a gun, and I probably wouldn't have done it if he was, but the point is that I didn't think about it, I just did it. I thought the cop was going to scold me, but he said "Good for you! I wish more people would stick up for themselves." Of course, today I'd probably be prosecuted for theft for getting my own wallet back.
I was with you until this idiotic sentence.

For parents with students, or a recent alumn, at UChicago can you speak to campus security measures that the school has taken? I have a high schooler who is interested in this school. Thanks

My kids walk back and forth to sports practice at Henry Crown (north, so Hyde Park side) and to labs that occur from 6:30-9pm sometimes Quad, central campus). They don’t report feeling generally unsafe, just normal alertness. They pay attention to the alerts and take Lyft late at night or walk with friends. We live in New York City, so they are used to needing to be alert and savvy about how they walk or travel around. I am more concerned as a parent.
Anonymous wrote:It’s really dangerous. The alerts that come out several times a night are shocking. Every single night.
If you are seriously considering, make sure you get access so you can see the sheer number of urgent security alerts that go out every single day.
And if you are set on sending your kid here:
Make sure you hire security for them to follow them around. I’m not kidding.
Parents have pooled together to hire their own Security/drivers etc.

Fighting back might not have been the best choice, but it's sad that she was even put in a situation like this. My kids did not apply to schools in Chicago, Baltimore, DC, Philadelphia and and NYC - all big cities, but where there are no tough on crime measures. Oh - and definitely no CA schools either.
I could have written the above except the last sentence.
