Being on the Penn campus feels like you’re in the wilderness surrounded by places you don’t want to go. There’s a reason cops are so prevalent. Northwestern is in a really safe area where you can focus on your studies & not worry about other things.
Penn’s campus is safe but your kids need to be able to navigate a city safely if they are going to explore Philly beyond the immediate surroundings of campus. Would also be true for leaving Evanston and exploring Chicago.
…..or even some parts of Evanston which aren’t particularly safe
Right, because Northwestern students are all so eager to go out exploring the west side of Evanston.

Agree, shame on you. What in the heck? You clearly do not have a student at Penn. We know many and have an upperclassman there. It is not cutthroat. They have never met anyone as these posts describe. It is stressful but their Stanford and Northwestern and Princeton friends from their HS report the same. Classes push them. They are all sci or engineering or CS and it’s hard at all these schools, but that is very different from cutthroat come on.
+1 I also have an upperclassman there who would agree with this. The students are very collaborative. My DC is in engineering and finds the classes challenging, but the professors are excellent and the engineering school is very well resourced.

You lack knowledge and insight about both universities if you think that one school is better than the other. Same students, different locations. Really depends upon specific majors.
The Penn brand is worth a lot more for networking, employment opportunities, and so on. The signaling model of education is real in the labor market. What does your degree signal to employers? It would be like saying there is no difference between MIT and Northwestern.

You can't go wrong with either. Even when you use totally different criteria (diversity, student opinions instead of college admin, etc) from US News (as the ranking below does), both compare very well with other schools.
