Can you recommend a less male-centric historical drama?

Yeah, what are some inspiring herstory movies? I could watch movies about knitting and dusting all day.

The Great. More sex, a lot more sex talk, less gory violence, more women manipulating simps.

Cosmo Jarvis as Tom Hardy as William Shatner as Captain Kirk in a time travelling wormhole to the feudal Japans.

What we need to put this into perspective is a “Far Side” cartoon showing a couple rabbits watching TV & one says, “I had no problem with ‘Shogun,’ but I couldn’t handle ‘Fatal Attraction.’”

Anonymous wrote:I also hate gratuitous violence and sex in movies and TV shows. Who wants to watch in a public cinema people moaning and writhing while having sex?? It's already uncomfortable by yourself much less surrounded by strangers.

I have the fact that moviemakers use violence and sex to sell movies. Many times chopping these scenes out does not change the storyline. They are unnecessary.

What’s wrong with gratuitous, completely unnecessary sex scenes?

There are people whose empathy centers in the brain light up with this kind of visual content (I know this is very unscientific language), and it’s extremely uncomfortable for them. Cognitively you know it’s not real (at least not in that moment with those actors), but parts of your brain don’t get that message. Other people’s brains don’t register it the same way.

I’m one of these people. I can read or these types of scenes but usually have to look away from them. It’s almost physically painful. I found that it got worse after I had my first child and never went back.

I actually enjoy reading summaries of horror movies because I’m never able to watch them. The Silence of the Lambs is one of my favorite movies, but I know exactly when I have to look away or go get a snack.

That is true. I can't watch bloody action movies or horror movies.

I don't mind Shogun for some reason. I think it is historically accurate and not too graphic.

I actually just had to leave the room, I got so upset with this stupid show. I have enough terrible things in my head I don't need to forever hear a man screaming as he's being boiled alive for hours.

Anyone else get very upset by violent content like this? I HATE it! I actually like some horror and I love a good murder show, but - jesus. Made me feel pretty good about my choice never to watch Game of Thrones.

It is history. The West was putting people on stakes and burning witches during the same period.

Anna Sawai is gorgeous.

Anonymous wrote:You realize that real life is pretty violent right? As well as this is historical fiction. How are yiu OK with Game of Thrones which is a silly mess of fiction and 1000 storylines and characters?

I mean how do you watch anything that's not a fantasy in entertainment? At least this is rooted in fact. Most of history is filled with torture and brutality you know this right?

Real life is mostly sleeping and sitting in traffic. Doesn't mean I'll watch a TV shows about it.

Now you know how I feel about “The View.”

LOL +1000

PP you are my friend!!

Seriously what did you people think Shogun was going to be about? Anything less than the torture they show would have been not historical fiction. What were you expecting?

They were expecting “The West Wing” with chopsticks.

Walking and talking.
Chopsticks and chopping off heads.

Anonymous wrote:"Male-centric", really, what show have you been watching because not the current one on FX that I have. Ladies Mariko and Ochiba are only 2 of the well-regarded/respected women in the series. Having grown up together, they both weld great influence over the events depicted in the series. Even Kiko, the famous coutesan is given esteem in the show. However, I do agree that Blackthorne's character is a big dud, which again, other than Lord Toranaga, female characters throughout the show are given better respect than the "Anjin" Blackthorne. And I love the authenticity of subtitles and Anna Suwai is great. I would say she is the lead character even.

3 of top 4, and 10 of top 16 characters are male.

A substantial portion of the female leads' lines are translating between two men.

It's pretty male-centric. Politics and war are pretty male-centric, especially in the 17th century.

I just could not get into it. By the 4th I was don't and also falling asleep/looking at my phone. So I cut my losses. Maybe if Blackthorne was more charismatic but he was awful. And the regents were immature and petty. I don't think the original book translated well in this show.
