Everyone I know who went to Davidson loved it, caveat being they were all athletes.

Econ if interested in research and PhD, I would say UVA. I know many stories of some professor being friends with another professor at another school. The latter accepts the former's student because the personal recommendation is highly valued.

I posted above-- wanted to add. UGA has no direct admit to business and Wisconsin does (but DC didn't get direct admit) and UGA has 2 chances to apply vs 1 try at Wisconsin. So it's a little more of a gamble. That being said, if they vibe with one much more, it won't matter!

Wow tough one. I went to GW and my kid to Pomona. Other kid to UVA. We were all poli sci so close to IR. My gut tells me Georgetown and then work hard on the waitlists. Princeton obvious and I would do Brown too.

Penn is Wharton and a little bit of engineering. No one thinks about the social science majors. And applications to Brown declined this year. Fair or not, it has a rep for rich kids floating through their self-guided curriculums while languishing in a mediocre city. Duke is more lively and varied and is generally good at everything. Ridiculous. I could just as easily say that Duke has a reputation for being douchey.

I would decide if the open curriculum is a pro or con for your student— some like the freedom to design their own education and for some it’s not a responsibility they necessarily want.

I think Penn and Duke are more alike than not so pick based on geography or feel.


Agreed. Brown parent here. Yeah there are rich kids, but also rich kids at Penn and Duke!
Kids at Brown are largely driven, high achievers with a creative bent. Classes are not easy, but the environment is more relaxed/supportive/collaborative than other top schools.

Williams. A school with grad students will have non-English speakers teaching math, and it sucks. My aspiring math major friends at a R1 with one of them best math departments in the country all dropped it because the grad students were incomprehensible.

Unless there is any meaningful difference in the Econ curriculums, go with school that feels like best fit.

This is a nice problem to have.

Williams will have the weakest Math/Applied Math program. Would choose Rice or Cornell over the UCs. Both UCLA and Berkeley have classes with more than 1500 students. They're fine for grad school, but undergrads are just cogs in the machine. Much better educational experience at Rice or Cornell.


Grew up in Houston and kid is at Cornell. Aside from weather, I would say Cornell has more national name. Rice is great for engineering etc. and if you want to be in Texas/South.

Tough choice.
Mine is loving Brown. Penn felt too businesslike. Did not consider Duke (wanted NE school). Loves open curriculum, variety of students, collaborative, creative nature of student body.

Choose Brown!

Ivy is Ivy. Prefer Penn overall but Brown probably slightly more prestigious.
