It was part of the divorce arrangement.
Her father helped rescue her and Suri from the Scientology nuts.

I get that Tom Cruise brainwashed them, but had that been me, I would not have stopped at anything to get my children back. She could have raised hell in the legal system and in the press, and she chose not to. That honestly says a lot about her.
Obviously, I think the same about Tom Cruise and Suri, but Katie Holmes probably has a lot of dirt on Tom Cruise - enough to scare him into silence. A terrible father, though, no doubt.
+1 I suspect she didn’t put up a fight because they are adopted.
Well, that only makes her a worse human being. She didn't fight for them because they weren't biologically hers? And to the other poster who said she gave up because she didn't have resources, seriously? I don't personally know any mother that would abandon her children in that way, even against insurmountable odds. Do you?

I think Nicole’s real problem is that she stayed too long. She was really a relative unknown when she married him and I think was just totally swept up for too longs. Back then people really didn’t know how toxic Scientology is — I always consumed them with Christian scientists. It was before all the documentaries and the whistleblowers. By the time she left her kids were already indoctrinated and would have told a judge they wanted to stay with their dad. And I’m sure she was too open in her audits and they had all sorts of blackmail on her.
Katie had several advantages —- a strong family of origin including a dad who is a good attorney, a lot more background knowledge about the whole Scientology scene (so if she was audited she probably wisely limited it to really boring stuff), and a kid who was still too young to voice her opinion before a court. So she traded her inside knowledge about Tom and Scientology (she clearly was making copies and collecting evidence) for exclusive rights to her kids. I bet they have a mutual NDA and so the interviewers are all informed that they can’t ask Tom about Katie or Suri or interview will be terminated.
I actually bet Tom was a great dad when they were together. He seemed really into being a father and was very doting plus he’s well known as being a lot of fun to be around. He was probably a nightmare husband because he’s a total control freak. Remember the stories about how he bought an ultrasound machine so they could just ultrasound Katie whenever when she was pregnant? That’s a level of involvement that would get old really fast — she couldn’t even have her uterus to herself!
I’m sure Suri has a ton of questions….really wonder what Katie tells her. I think that would be a really tough position for a mom to be in.

If that was the case it would have been a very easy way to disentangle herself from Tom. She wouldn't have needed to do all the cloak and dagger stuff to get out of the marriage.
Anonymous wrote:How is it that Tim Cruise has managed to avoid the stink of being a father that abandoned his child? It doesn’t seem like any other major celebrity could not see their child for a decade, through that kid’s entire childhood, and still do interviews where no one asks about it and do hit movie after movie. No one ever asks him about it and it is just so weird that he walked away from a 5 yr old kid forever.
