I think it's helpful to give general examples. Then OP can go to the mall and find something that meshes her style and color preferences with the general idea.
I think short dresses and skirts are best for dates.
I think OP needs a 22 year old frirr er nc to help her not 50 yo women on this site.
Lol. 50-year-old affluent women like us are who she's trying to impress.
If my future daughter in-law shows up in a cheetah print mini-dress with cleavage, I'll either know my son is deeply in love or he's lost his mind.
I agree this is a code-switching occasion.
I’d run as fast as I could if a woman like you didn’t like be because I very appropriately showed up in a miniskirt and sweater like every 20 something is wearing.
I’m also an affluent woman who just met my son’s girlfriend and I knew she would be nervous so I was especially kind, but I would never judge her dress, I’d also assume she was poor AF being a recent graduate.
Besides he went to MIT, she could wear a star wars tshirt and skirt and it would be fine.
Have you ever even been to Cambridge or a Ivy campus?
PP. Yes. Have been to 3 Ivy campuses recently. Coeds are pretty badly dressed everywhere.
I didn't say I would be mean to someone dressed badly (=cheetah print). Just that I know that's not my family's style.
I would actually prefer Star Wars T-Shirt daughter-in-law to sexy babe daughter-in-law. If anyone cares about my opinion, and I know it's not my choice.
I would, however, like to see a young person make an effort to dress nicely to go out to an expensive restaurant. Sexy clothes are for dates.
I sense there is a divergence on this board between preppies and trendies. The latter don't seem to accept that classic pieces exist and one can be open-minded about where to find them.

A cashmere sweater with nice pants and loafers. If you’re comfortable in skirts, wear that.
Good luck!Anonymous wrote:I'd look at Boden. Young enough, but a dowdier Reformation that will please conservative parents, and is appropriate for church service.
This with a cardigan:

Heels or un-crazy sandals, simple jewelry. Small understated bag.

BTW, miss coherent arbiter of style...what is a "frirr er nc"? Please tell us old ladies so we can stay hip to impress the youth!

This.
Is this okay with black flats? https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/vince-camuto-long-sleeve-faux-wrap-dress?ID=4688997&CategoryID=1005208&sizes=RTW_CLOTHING_SIZE_T!!4%2C%20S
heh no
Okay, what about this? https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=841806002&cid=69883&vid=1&nav=meganav%3AWomen%3AWomen%27s%20Clothing%3ADresses%20%26%20Jumpsuits#pdp-page-content
No - too dressy.
Okay. Would this work? https://www.stories.com/en_usd/clothing/dresses/knitted-dresses/product.belted-mini-knit-dress-green.1021468017.html
Or this with tights and boots: https://www.zara.com/us/en/striped-mock-neck-knit-dress-p02142035.html?v1=320056633&v2=2352752
Yes! As long as the boots don't make it too sexy. Love that dress.
^ I mean I think either of those dresses could work so long as they aren't too short/sexy with the boots. I love the & Other Stories dress, think the Zara one would also be fine.
Great, thank you so much!

Something like this is appropriate anywhere imo and you could wear tights and boots.
Love this dress, but I think pretty expensive for a 'meet the parents' brunch.
