Why would anyone pick UMD honors over say Cornell?

I know one person who did about 7 years ago. She went to a terrific grad school and is doing well! Many published papers during undergrad + grad school and now has a great career.
The kids I know at Cornell (including my niece several years ago) sometimes wish they'd gone elsewhere... It's depressing especially in the winter and there seems to be competition that can prevent you from getting positions or research jobs.

FWIW, DC's stats were 4.0 uwgpa, 4.92 wgpa from an MCPS magnet, 1580 SAT, loads of AP, all 5s except 1 (had 58 credits going in). Got merit.

Which mcps magnet and how much was the merit?

Don't want to say as the details can be too identifying, but they got $20K total. Going through the 4+1 CS masters program. Will graduate in 4 years with 2 bachelors and 1 masters, all for under $150K. Not too shabby.

also, they did well their first year (still doing well. straight As) and got additional merit aid for the $3k additional tuition for CS majors.
