Tenners. Not sure where it came from, but I grew up in northern Minnesota and everyone called them that.

I have two close friends who grew up in Montgomery County. One comes from a gigantic family largely based in the Midwest, and she says tennis shoes. The other comes from a family originating in Philadelphia and she says sneakers. Go figure.

I haven't played tennis is years and even I know you need a flat, thin sole for the shoes you play tennis in (so you can stop abruptly and turn without falling off them. The serious runners I know have a pair of shoes that they only use for running.

You can wear either of them as casual wear, but different sports call for different shoes.

So I ask my question again, do people actually differentiate between "tennis shoes" and "sneakers" when tennis shoes are just literally nikes?


Yes. My Asics tennis shoes are for tennis only. I wouldn’t want to run a mile in them, they’re meant to support lateral movement and and aren’t all that cushioned. I have a different pair of ASICS for running, they feel completely different and don’t give enough ankle support for tennis.


Agree! And I have even a designated pair for clay surface as well. Pretty sure I say ;tennis shoes" and for both unless I need to distinguish.

But I will clarify that I have multiple pairs- my running sneakers, my walking sneakers, my gym sneakers, and my tennis sneakers. And a pair of house sneakers too that I wear only inside when I do an aerobics video instead of another workout due to weather conditions.
