Thoughts?

We had similar situation and tried to compromise:

Required teen DC to attend important family events in other countries but did not travel as much as we like.

My kids were grumpy on our spring break trip to Paris and London. But now they talk about it fondly. We will plan for each of them to choose a location, their ninth grade year. Aside from that, we usually hit the beach. My daughter wants to go to Japan for hers. Hope I can make it happen.

As your kids what kind of vacations they are in to.

Clearly you haven’t had the pleasure of parenting teenagers yet. You’ll see, lol. You’ll be eating your words!

I agree with the PP…I’ll also add that you raised them incorrectly if they don’t like to travel. I have two boys—14 and 16 and they’ve even done the itineraries for our trips the last few years and starting last summer, they even booked the hotels, flights, and made restaurant and attraction reservations.

At some point during the next ten years, you and your parenting will be humbled.

Depends. Do they enjoy themselves once they are there or complain the entire time and make it miserable for everyone else?

There are two purposes for our family vacations. One is to see my family who lives across the country. That trip always happens. We go for about two weeks every year. Our teen gets more say in our family vacation because I think it’s important for us to all enjoy it and make memories. I will caveat this by saying I am a teacher, so we are home and have a lot of downtime in the summer, I think that makes a difference for my kid and his willingness to leave town more often.

Silly comment. Some teens don’t like to travel and it’s not a negative. Personal preferences are ok!

The prior PP asserted that NO teens like to travel, which is just stupid.

Several ppl in this thread are saying that their kids don’t like to travel bc they are addicted to their phones…that’s just pathetic.

I haven’t seen any of the comments you’re alleging.

Agree. The reason they don’t like to travel is because they want to spend time with friends over school breaks or sleep in and relax. It’s understandable given how busy they are during the school year and especially on weekdays.
I’ve heard this from several other parents of teens. I try to schedule trips for only part of the break time and leave a few days of the break for them to spend time at home as they wish.

DP. I’ve lived in three other countries for years. I’m definitely a world traveler. We eat everything too. DH too.

My teens have absolutely no interest in traveling to other countries in the same way that I did. They do have other interests, ones that I did not have when I was their age.

Just to say, don’t blame the parents

When we were last in Europe, the teens were exhausted and just wanted to be on Snapchat for the evening. Fine with us. We locked up the suite and had a nice date night with wine and cheese. In that sense, parenting with teens is easier!

Or you just have one. I have two teens, 3 kids total, and they completely disagree on what they like!

Yes, we force them but we are down to one major trip a year because their schedules are so busy.
