I have an almost three year old Australian Shepherd and I regret the day we got her. The kids wanted her and now doing nothing for her. She's my hyperactive forever puppy and I have a toddler. Fun times.

If the kids are old enough to be in sports and activities they are old enough to help slightly.
They are old enough to put food in dog bowl and full water bowl.
Possibly old enough to throw a ball or stick in the back yard for a few minutes a day.
My lab mix ( a rescue) is 12 now and still hikes an hour a day most days with me.
I enjoy it because it forces me to exercise.
Having said that, if DH won’t help more with kids and/or dog and it’s all on you you are going to get resentful.

Do we just try and push through or try and rehome her? The rescue said she was a mid size lab mix. She isn’t at all. She is a 75 pound boxer/pit mix who is very strong and muscular.


op do you not love this dog at all? How long have you had him/her? Is dh the only one who wants the dog?

There are way too many dogs right now. Too many dog owners who can't handle their dogs (not you, you seem like a responsible dog owner who got stuck with the wrong dog, but so many people who don't hav the first clue about having a dog but have them anyway). Pits everywhere, because they have been way overbred specifically because they are aggressive. It's so frustrating. I wish we could hit a reset on dog ownership in this country. Op - I am very disillusioned with rescues. I did not want a pit bull. Never rescued before so didn’t know they literally are all pit bull mixes. We should have just bought a dog from a breeder.

A responsible rescue will take the dog back.

Most dogs who go there have zero training and zero recall. It's like a 24 hour nightclub with guys coming up to bothering you but, you can't leave and they don't take any subtle hints. Lots of dog fights. Now if you know the dogs and the dogs play well that is different but, it is public and you never know what dog is going to show up and if the owner is more interested in chat/phone than actually watching and correcting their dogs

Op - we do sit and stay all day since she is on a leash non stop during the day right now.

She already nice leash walks since we walk multiple times a day.

You literally spend 3 hours a day with this animal but wont bother to do any training other than mindless running?

Op, I would revoke this dog. You have to devote hours a day to walks and training?! Yeah no, girl bye. I have a King Charles cavalier and she just sits around all day being nice. Never barks, loves to snuggle and sleep. Has never destroyed anything. Some days she doesn’t even want to walk, just outside to potty. She’s the nicest dog in the world.

This. It’s completely unacceptable for him to make that call unless he is the one who will do the work. Alternately, price out outsourcing the 3+ hrs/day and if he’s willing to pay for that, fine. But he doesn’t get to write a check that you have to cash.
