By "diverse" do you mean poor or black?

Racist, much?
So which is it, poor or black?

OP here - in my case, more diversity means lots of things, one being economic diversity. I am a single mom, and cannot afford a house, so we always live in condo buildings. I am far from poor, but I do not live in a $ 2 million house either. That is the other reason I am considering Westland/BCC.

Being a single mom means nothing as you can be having a very high income. The schools will be pretty similar so pick the house you like. You can afford a house, just maybe not in the area you want. Condos aren't always great with condo fees.

OP here - I cannot afford a house, thus the condo.

Condo's in that area cost more than houses in other areas. You Can afford something nice but you want to live in that area. Then, you'll come back complaining about other things because you choose that area. Good luck.

OP here - aren't you just the sweetest .....
You can purchase condos for $ 300-450K in the Westland/Pyle neighborhood. Where can you buy a house for that much? Please do tell me. Due to work and other issues, I am not able to move to Germantown or places far out like that....but thanks.

NP - have you checked the condo fees? My mom lives in an older building in downtown Bethesda and her condo fee is almost $1200 a month. What the pp is trying to say is that if you threw that on a mortgage, you could probably afford a townhouse or house.

OP - thanks PP, no, I cannot afford a townhouse ($ 7-800K) or house ($ 1-2mill) in the Westland/Pyle neighborhood. The condo fees are around a $1,000 yes, and it is high, yes, but still more affordable if condo price is $ 3-450K and the condo fee included all utilities. I would be still paying much less than for a townhouse/house.

That makes sense. Thank you. While my question ruffled some progressive feathers, these racists mean poor or black when they say diverse. For instance they don't consider Churchill diverse because they count Asians as white, which is racist and insane. But that's progressives for you.

OP here - no, diverse can mean a lot of things; I would not simplify it the way you imply. Whitman and Churchill do not have a reputation as being diverse though...it is really tiring that everything on DCUM comes down to race. At least it is very tiresome for me.
Churchill is extremely diverse. Even Whitman is 40% non-white. You'd have to be insane to view that as anything but diverse. Of course race-obsessed progressives want busing to make it even more diverse but that's a whole other thing.

There is more to diversity than just race.
Sure sure. Keep trying to sell that lie.

Diversity is race, money, lifestyle. You are looking for all of that or you' move somewhere where you can afford a nice house for your kids.

My child is an 8th grader at Westland.
My college freshman was in a different MCPS cluster (North Bethesda and WJ).

The truth is that your child has to associate with good students. You are who your friends are. This is how kids survive public school, since publics are mandated to welcome everyone. Just because we live in wealthy neighborhoods doesn't mean there aren't some problematic behaviors.

My kids have made good friends in their respective schools and avoid the kids who like to vape, steal from stores, etc.

My pet peeves are:

1. Westland and the BCC cluster in general don't seem to be as hell-bent on academics as the WJ and WW clusters. They're very into "let's all relax and try to persuade parents not to accelerate their kids", which doesn't suit me, because I have a kid who needs acceleration in math. She is bused to BCC for Alg 2, because they don't have a large enough contingent of kids to have that class at Westland. Since we know a lot of the kids from Bethesda Elementary, I think they could very well have had enough students for an Alg 2 class... but MCPS seems to be trying to put the lid on that.

2. The buses are a mess. After multiple fights on the bus, I am now picking her up from Westland.

Yikes this is so not what I wanted to read, as the parent of a current 4th grader at Bethesda Elementary. The 4th grade compacted math class has over 35 students - and I assume other feeders to Westland must have them too. How can there not be enough to accelerate?

Compacted math feeds into 7th grade algebra and geometry in 8th which is a common track. Algebra in 6th is what leads to PP’s situation of being bused to BCC.

Ah, got it. Thanks!

Keep in mind that there will be a couple big boundary studies done in the next few years and the BOE is looking to make schools more diverse. So your kids may get moved to a school you don't want regardless of what you choose now. That's progressivism.

OP here - well, then we will move again I guess....school/education is most important.

It’s not that other kids will be mean about it, but it may make your child feel like they don’t fit in as well or feel bad if they can’t do some of the same things. Other kids who don’t have to worry about finances and money can be oblivious to the fact that others do, and that can feel bad.

OP here - thanks PP, exactly.
