Our kid is in the midst of applying to 10 schools. Could be 12 depending on how she feels in January!

3 in state (VA, accepted to one early)
2 OOS public (accepted to one rolling)
The possible 2 remaining are private.

In support of applying to more, rather than less, when seeking merit aid. We would never have been able to anticipate that, out of 10 schools, #2 most expensive, would become the most affordable - by far.
Only visited after acceptance and COA was known. The Winner!

Exactly this.
I have three of those. # apps? 4, 8, 5 respectively. All accepted to state flagship plus 2-4 others, including several top 20 schools. Applying to >12ish schools doesn’t improve a student’s “chances.” It means a lack of program focus, understanding how to match a school academically, or being able to communicate your “fit” to a school.

Seriously don't apply to places you are unlikely to go. Don't apply to 10 places hoping 1 will give you some miraculous aid package. Don't apply to T20 unless you have legit qualifications.
After the dust settled on #1 we both thought "why did we send all these?" for about half of the applications.
2nd kid Applied to in-State U. Backup in-state U and 2 fancy schools.
