We have them linked to our accounts and they show up in Find My, but they have never ever played a sound which we can use to find them, nor is there an option to alert us if we leave them behind. I assume that is a gen three feature, we have only had the first GEN AirPods.
in all cases, she knows where she left them but when we go to look for them, they are gone. Or perhaps hidden within the room in a way that we can’t find them unless you could get them to play a sound.
Then get the newer ones.

So she lost them twice. Your title makes it seem as if she has lost multiple pairs on an annual basis.

Unless you’ve never lost anything in your life, what’s the big god damn deal?
Cut the kid a bit of slack. Mine is stressed and overworked and slogging away in the throes of high school. Something that was somewhat fun, once upon a time. But is no longer.
Then throw in friend drama. And a million other anxieties. . . I’m inclined to show a little grace for mistakes like this. Even a few times.

Three options
Have them get a job and pay for them or pay for half.
Buy good knock offs on Amazon for $30
Get over the ear headphones.
Kids can work if they want to. Raking leaves, baby sitting/mother helping, pet walking, shoveling snow, taking out people's trash cans, tutoring elementary school kids, giving sports training etc.

College DS washed his with his laundry, then managed to lose the right one shortly after. He is home for the break and told us he managed to lose the left one recently as well. DH already got a new pair for DS for Christmas. If he loses or damages this pair, the he will be fending for himself from that point on, at least AirPod wise.
