Thank you! Others mentioned donating to Angel tree, foster kids…. I was a foster kid, which is why I didn’t really know how to handle the situation. I’ve always donated to organizations around this time that supported me as a foster kid.

Not a troll, I think he worked with a wholesaler and got a good deal but not good enough of a deal to walk away from the relationship with the money he put into it. He was really excited for the relationship/family he’d be gaining with it and sunk a lot of money into it. He enjoyed the Christmas explained in the OP, but also thought it was a little nuts at first. I live in the city so ofcourse I didn’t have ‘room’ for the hot tub so we didn’t get that one everyone else did.

Since this post we’ve decided to go every 3 years for Christmas. Because of the piles of gifts on Christmas, and we rather travel to see them when quality family time takes precedence.

Oh wow I wonder if you are related to my husband. They got to the point that they could not open all the gifts in one day. Insanity.

We do not visit for Christmas. Other holidays where it is just my husband’s immediate family are much better.

(Christmas gifts, not birthday gifts, LOL)

My FOO does kids only which is really nice. There's no reason for adults to give each other copious amounts of birthday gifts, it's so dumb. Christmas is for the children. We do gifts until kids get married and age out.

I have two pieces of advice - (1) set and adhere to boundaries and (2) don't let yourself get shamed for adhering to those boundaries even when others do not.
