Phillip was able to be both a detached observer and older role model to Will to tell him what he needed to know.

Meh! That’s the only word I can use to describe these last final episodes. We know that the Queen never abdicated so why focus the series finale on such an artificial dilemma?
That period of time, 2002-2005 ish is one where nothing really interesting happens both in the royal family and the UK as a whole so that seems an odd place for the producers to choose to end the series on. A little earlier was 9/11 and 20 years later was COVID, the whole Harry debacle, and the death of Phillip and the Queen herself which would have been much more fertile ground for a final season.

Agree and to bring this back to the show, Charles et al did the same thing to Diana - she only had regular police security at public events - and that was one of the reasons that spending time with the Fayeds that summer was so attractive. The show is very pro Charles so it doesn’t mention that.
