Son was admitted to UVA OOS with a 4.0/4.5 with 11 AP courses (6 at time of application with all 5s), lots of volunteering with same org for 6 years with a leadership role + awards, varsity team captain 2 years, part time job, elite club soccer for 10 years, completed AP Spanish 5, and a few other misc awards. We are from California and even with these stats, he was rejected from UCLA and waitlisted at Cal. It's hard out there and very, very unpredictable. My take is UVA really seems to value what you do outside the classroom and how you communicate & bring those experiences to life in your essays.
Wishing this year's OOS applicants much luck!!

Didn't make sense financially without scholarship with UNC tuition, but chose an Ivy anyway as wanted a smaller school. The focus changed a bit as year progressed and was less interested in larger state schools.
