Subject: Some stores are doing away with self checkouts
I don’t mind doing it at Target or Giant if I only have a few things. It should always be a choice though imo. If I go to Target right after school drop off there is never a cashier working. If the store is open a cashier should be too.

My local Walmart Neighborhood market, a few years ago, went to 'all' self checkout...like, all the checkouts were arranged in sort of a pen where a monitor would let you in to go scan your stuff. It was so annoying and crowded in there. Not to mention, impossible for some people with mobility disabilities to use, and for some elderly people too.
About a year later, they removed the whole setup, put back in 3 regular cashier lanes, and some lines of self checkouts (not in a pen). It's much better! I can put a large order on the belt and have it bagged, and I can go quickly through self check if it's a few items.

2 minutes at $15/hr is 50 cents. After taxes, maybe 30 cents.
It takes me much longer than two minutes.

My Giant put a 20 item or less limit. So dumb. I ignore it all the time. Why? Because they only have 1 manned checkout open and it always has a huge line. The self-checkout monitor over the weekend told me "ma'am, you have 25 items" and I pretended I was deaf. I was in and out before 2 people moved through the manned checkout.
Because the rules don’t apply to you?

Some days to avoid the long-cashier-will-throw-your-food-lines at Giant I go through once, buy canned goods, put in my car, then go back in and buy produce and milk. It is a ridiculous game.

My local grocery store has a very sensitive bagging area or something, so any slight movement like adjusting my bag to make room for other items or opening another empty bag will give me "Unexpected item in bagging area" error. I didn’t mind doing self checkout until Giant went to this god awful system, it now I just use the staffed lanes. I mean the people actually stealing items aren’t moseying on up to the self checkouts and pretending to scan their items, they are just stuffing stuff in their bags or just rolling their carts right out the door.
The entire exercise reminds me of post 9/11 when buildings started hiring guards and making people scan in before entering a building, all performative and meant to deter but in actuality it won’t deter a real criminal. So everyone is else just gets inconvenienced.

Yes. When it was first introduced it was as you describe and I liked that. Then the stores went overboard. I'll wait in line now just to avoid the self-checkout.

And every store I go to seems to have a different process for recognizing the bags I brought from home.
How many bags do you want? None.
Unexpected item in the bagging area. It's my reusable bag, you stupid computer.
Right? Especially after I've been instructed "Please place your bags in the bagging area"
I like self-checkout just fine. I hate stores that set it up poorly (hey, Costco, I can load my entire cart so the bar code are facing up -- let's get scanning)
