OP here.

Grand Highlander Hybrid Max

Only one that didn’t require a sacrifice in efficiency (27 mpg), performance, or space.

Other serious contenders were the Mazda CX 90 and the Telluride.

I was trying to decide btwn the grand highlander hybrid vs lexus gx but in the end I felt like I needed a 4x4. We already have a RAV4 hybrid

Have been considering Grand Highlander, and maybe the Lexus TX (used, in 1-2 years). Neither were IIHS top safety picks (TX is new but based on GH framework so they treated the same). Any thoughts on the safety of GH?

OP here.

I bought before the safety testing was conducted.

GH did pretty well overall and its primary shortcoming (“acceptable” rating) related to possible risk to the driver (me).

Would I buy it again? Yes.

Different story if the issue put passengers (kids) at risk.

PS— Also, likely that Toyota will address the issue for 2025 model year.

So if you wait a year, might get improved rating.

Not ideal. Headlights could maybe be addressed before a redesign but the small overlap test won’t change before a redesign. That’s an old test - no excuse for Toyota not to ace it. And this doesn’t even mention the newer updated moderate front overlap test, which is the new gold standard.

Hey OP!
Just found this thread. I am looking for a GH Hybrid in Limited trim or a GH Max in Platinum trim. The difference in MPG is considerable but not a deal breaker for me. Do you think the GH Hybrid would be too sluggish for a daily driver?
Good thread! Appreciate your efforts.

OP.

Liked the space.

Hated the touch screen controls for all functions (no button options).

Meh driving experience.

But you went with the Toyota? Bwahahahaha. Driving experience was a total dealbreaker for us wrt to the Toyota.

and VWs are pieces of garbage. OP says they keep cars for 10 years. VW starts falling apart at about three. I've owned two of them. Worst mistakes of my life. Never again.

There is not much difference between the two models in terms of highway mileage. Did you consider Platinum? What made you choose Max platinum over platinum? Thanks.

Sry--just saw this.

I chose Max Limited over regular Limited for 2 reasons:

1. I wanted the better fuel economy from Max. Figured that the fuel savings would cover the price difference over the life of the car.

2. The Max is more fun and easier to drive. Merging or turning into traffic is SO easy because of the acceleration.

I should note that so far, fuel economy on my Max has been around 24 mpg. 95% city driving.

Not sure if the estimated fuel economy is high, or if I just have a lead foot.

Thank you, OP. This is helpful.

I am considering the Hyundai Palisades. Toyota Grand Highlander is nearly impossible to get without a market adjustment mark up of 5-7$K.
Hyundai Palisades is roomier and has much more bells and whistles. I like the design better and has a much better warranty.

The 2024 Acadia third row seats three. It is a full row. So an 8 passenger SUV
