+1

I hate this movie. I think it is vile and I made it though once and could not get it out of my head. It makes me physically ill. I remember looking up the purpose or meaning and seeing that it’s really about trying to reform someone and how that doesn’t work or some crap. I just thought it was truly depraved.

House of Sand and Fog, for sure.

+1 to the first two sentences (I don't recognize the theme music, though). I'll add Breaking the Waves. I'll never rewatch it or any Lars von Trier film.

Like many others, Requiem for a Dream. I felt like I had to keep watching through til the end, but I never want to watch it again. I immediately recognize the theme music whenever I hear it.

Another one that I wouldn’t call “heavy”, but really disturbed me, was John Waters’ Pink Flamingos. I watched it as part of a film festival and had to leave after a certain scene. That’s one that I just really don’t understand the critical acclaim/cult following. I know it’s a black comedy but I really didn’t find those themes funny.

OP Again, I've spent all morning googling your suggestions and trying to find them free on streaming I pay for. I won't watch movies about war, the Holocaust or anything post-apocalypse. Here is my list. It's long.

Philadelphia
Conversations with Friends
Donny Darko
Dear Zachary
Into the Wild
Hotel Rwanda
Precious
The Deer Hunter

I assume it's about a month of movies for me.

I have watched and loved many of the movies here, I also often seek out the tougher movies, they hit the hardest and really stick with me.

My favorite film of the last decade is "The Lives of Others" -- I really really recommend it. It is such a beautiful film, and the ending!!!

Subtitles though (German).

Thanks everyone, unfortunately many of the older movies are not available on streaming. I did find Dear Zachary and Into the Wild so I'll watch those this week.

Came looking for this one. Watched it over a decade ago and I’m still not okay
Same. I needed to avoid people and sit in silence for quite a while after this.

I just read the synopsis and feel upset and like I need a minute jeez

I came here to say Requiem for a Dream which has already been mentioned a few times. I credit that movie with keeping me drug-free.
