I just realize what annoys me about it. It reminds me of a woman who used to always refer to her daughter as her "mini." And always that construction -- "my mini." They did look alike. But there's something about referring to your kid like they are just a mini verse of you that is very gross to me. And especially when it's a diminutive. If feels really narcissistic and precious.

Sometimes I call my kids “kiddo” as a term of endearment like “sweetheart” or “dear” (which I also use). Personally the one in find grating in that context is honey but given that these kinds of things are generally strictly in a family it’s not my business.
Using kiddo/kiddos (or littles blech) for other people’s kids feels definitely odd to me and I don’t do it but it doesn’t drive me crazy when others do.
And for the people arguing that kiddo/littles are gendered, I think male equivalent is “buddy” which honestly I don’t like very much either.
