For a long time DMV because the metropolis surrounding it has swelled to over 7 million. DC is the heart of DMV in my opinion but the legal and arms are important too!
If WV was part of DMV it would have to be changed to DMVWV.
Not just geographically but culturally and politically, WV really does not feel part of this metropolis.

Really? I’m a Black 3rd generation DC Native. My parents’ generation usually said “the District “, while younger people (who are now kinda old too) usually said and say DC. I first heard DMV from white people who lived in Virginia, and transplants, starting around the Obama years

and yet today it ranks somewhere in or near the bottom 5 of all states for nearly all socio-economic indicators. and it's the 6th least environmentally friendly state in the country. talk about ignorant.

For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau and other federal agencies include Jefferson County as part of the DMV.
The census might, but I bet most people would not consider WV as part of DMV.
Most people around here would not consider Frederick County MD as part of the DMV, meaning the DC area. Charlestown WV is about equidistant to DC as Frederick, so why would Charlestown be considered part of the DMV?
The DMV is basically the DC area which includes the suburbs of DC. Neither Howard County MD nor Frederick County MD is a suburb of DC, and neither is any WV county.

But I’m from southern WV, and Md is NOT Appalachia. The Appalachian Mountains go up all the way to Newfoundland, surely we aren’t including that as Appalachia? The mountain range and the cultural region are not the same.

It’s by far the wealthiest, for one thing. It’s the only West Virginia county where the median family income is higher than the national average. It’s also much more moderate politically. While it went for Trump in 2020 like literally every county in the state, it and the county where WVU is located are the only two that came close to 50/50.
Monongalia county? I wonder how they calculate who counts in the population for those kind of stats? Do students count? About half the population of Morgantown is students.
