I know a number of kids that transfered to kenmore because of their arts focus.

So the constant violence is OK as long as there is an arts focus?

When my DD was there, there wasn't much violence to speak of. She was in all the intensified classes that were available at the time. She is a senior at Yorktown now and has close friends from Kenmore at all of the other high schools in Arlington. We transferred her from Williamsburg to Kenmore for arts / technology. This was before Hamm opened so lots of overcrowding at Wmsburg and Swanson then.

Kids who attend Kenmore & live north of highway 50 go to W&L (I believe) and south go to Wakefield. Kenmore may (or might not) become the new immersion location but the SB put that convo on hold. You might consider joining Arlington Education Matters to get a feel for how some parents feel about APS. So far we are still new to Kenmore but find the staff responsive (but we are heavily involved and pay for a lot of external activities for our kid).

Not exactly. The neighborhood where the school is located, s of 50, and all the way down to Columbia Pike but west of 4MR are zoned to WL. Only a small number of Kenmore PUs are zoned Wakefield.

The single family neighborhoods north of 50 zoned to Kenmore are zoned to Yorktown. South of 50, most of Kenmore (prob around 80-90%) are zoned to W-L, and the remainder, mostly the single family homes near Barcroft ES are zoned to Wakefield.

This is incorrect. There are Single Family neighborhoods north of 50 that go to Kenmore, and then are zoned to WL

Yes, the Ashlawn PUs are now split between YHS and WL, and Barrett PUs are zoned WL. Majority of Kenmore kids, N or S, go to WL and a the remainder are split between YHS and Wakefield.

Anyway, our kid and the ones in our neighborhood, past and present, have had good experiences at Kenmore. We don’t hear a lot of complaints, honestly. And nobody we know in real life has pulled their kid to private or moved away to escape, not even the ones whose kids went to ATS for ES, and these are families who could do so in a heartbeat. In fact, we do know a few kids who have transferred in, either to stay with ES friends or for the arts program.

It’s always so surprising to me it read on here about it being “scary” or there being a lot of bullying. I just don’t hear that in real life.

Interesting. We are in the same neighborhood and know two families within a two block radius that pulled their sons out from APS for middle school

Two of our DCs teachers flat out told so. We tried for 1.5 years to work through things and take time to understand the situation before we just pulled our DC out of Kenmore. Things are so much better at private but that age group is tough and there's still issues. The school is able to handle the situation differently and smaller class sizes also makes a big difference.

This is the case across APS middle schools, not just at Kenmore.

Some APS middle schools have more issues than others. We moved (not because of schools) but had to change and the two schools are night and different. All schools have issues but some do have more than others.

Can you say which 2 schools are so different?

Ha that's true, and if you aren't rich rich you can probably count on your kid getting bullied at least a little bit.

We moved my daughter from public elementary to private middle school, thinking that it would be better socially. But she was the relatively poor kid and it was awful for her. Just tons of overt class shaming. We moved her back to public middle school, where she was much happier.

Can you say more about this? Im surprised to hear this and curious as to what school you went to.
