Sending a kid with a low GPA to a school full of kids who came in with low GPAs is throwing money away. Colleges will still be there after a few years in the Army.

My DS CLAIMS he wants to go to college, but his behavior, & grades do not support that claim. We're in the 11th grade, & I know we need to start at least identifying colleges, to start visiting and applying next year.

NOT INTERESTED IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES! I want him to go away, get out of the DMV, which I think will help tremendously, & experience college campus life, hoping it will turn him around. But, starting out the gate, early signs point to him NOT getting into, for a lack of better words, a "GOOD or Highly sought after" college. Open to location.

Any thoughts or recommendations? If you can, please refrain from bashing.

OP, have him do his OWN research on a site like collegefactual.com or niche.com where he has to make a profile with his GPA. Chancing schools and seeing costs were a much needed reality check for my junior 2 years ago. Fast-forward, busted his ass and upped GPA enough to get into 3 of 11 viable options.

College is a really vague concept even for kids who think they want to get a degree.

Let him figure out some of it himself.

Mason - and he can live on campus, so it will feel like he is in a different environement than "home", OP.

Also, Mary Washington or Willemette (OR)?

Suffolk is not well regarded, but Boston is! Could work out ok. Pace, Baruch, Hunter (NYC) get more respect (jobs). Depends on his interests and city preference. VCU? Seems like the DMV region has more to offer. Someone mentioned High Point, but not sure how much money you’re planning to throw at it. Some Florida schools might work. Is he artistic— Flagler. Rollins? It’s in a beautiful urban(ish) area, Winter Park. Is he athletic? What region are you in for state schools?

You are not doing him any favors by doing this, op. Why do you have such little faith that he can't turn it around? Also, a main problem I see is you are too enmeshed with your son.. You are NOT in the 11th grade. Your son is. Let him take the lead...have some faith

Stockton and Kean might admit a student below 3.0, but they both have a 3.0 minimum for discounting OOS tuition

CNU has gotten more competitive and would be a tough admit for a kid below a 3.0. According the their website, “the middle 50 percent high school GPA range for our freshman class is 3.5–4.0 (4.0 scale).” Other sources have average GPA at 3.8.

This is erroneous advice. The GPA has to be combined with rigor and the school's profile. It's not an absolute number.

Too many more to list. Would be helpful if more information about your son was shared.

Any interest in Maritime colleges ?

My 2023 kid that is going to a top 40 college with a 33 ACT was outright rejected from Clemson. There is zero chance for this kid to get into Clemson.

Have to wonder this was a case of yield protection as an ACT score of 33 is high for Clemson and within the past few years Clemson drove down its acceptance rate from 62% to 49%.

No, Clemson is hard to get into from our area. Hundreds of kids are applying now from NoVA alone.

Georgia State has a really ugly campus in Downtown Atlanta with a lot of commuters.
