This isn't an isolated event - we are constantly worrying about our tires getting stolen overnight (happens multiple times a month), getting mugged (has happened to two neighbors in the last few months), getting carjacked (happens ALL THE TIME NOW), and now worried about getting shot by juveniles while getting carjacked. WTF is wrong with this city?
DC Police and elected officials have been very slow to respond (and some haven't responded at all).
This guy survived the Taliban but then gets shot by kids in DC. They were trying to steal his car. This was a CARJACKING ATTEMPT turned deadly. It's awful, just awful. I hope they find these kids. I hope our elected officials start punishing these criminals (I don't care how old they are, if they are brandishing a gun they should be tried as adults) and move the needle in the other direction.
I didn't even bother to register where in DC this happened... surprised about the location... so close to the Hill. Sad.
It happened in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, amongst million dollar townhomes and 10 blocks from the U.S. Capitol. People need to wake up. This wasn't a targeted crime. It was random. I think a lot of us sleep a little easier when we think about how all the crime around us is targeted - but it's not. This is too much. DC Council, wake up. Your voters are frustrated. Neighbors are already talking about voting out certain council members.
The good voters of Capitol Hill gave us Mr. Charles Allen. His fingerprints are all over the crime crisis. Please do better in the next election.
Unfortunately this. Charles Allen has been wagging his finger for years how the poor teenage criminals are actually the real victims here. Any possibility we can finally vote him out?

Whether it’s BLM, defund the police, the school lockdowns, etc. almost everything they touched during pandemic has brought us to this point.
Then how can it be that red states and rural areas are also seeing similar increases in crime? I think you’re just another partisan mud slinger.
Are they? Anecdotally everyone I know who is concerned about crime lives in an urban area in a blue state. No one I know in red state cities has complained about an increase in crime.

True. I have lived in both DC and Red states. And now live in rural Maryland. There is really no comparison as it relates to the violent crime and the sense of lawlessness you feel.

I live in DC. I can only speak to the foolish choices of the elected leaders here. But if I had to guess I’d bet the data is incomplete because out of over 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country, the FBI only received data from approximately 9,800 of them. As a result, the 2021 stats dont capture the true scope of crime wave that has erupted in cities. Not to mention that many cities have decriminalized activities that are still crimes in red states.

Society cannot function when you've got criminals running around getting slap on the wrists when they are caught, only to commit the same or worse crime days later. If you commit a crime with a deadly weapon, straight to jail you go with a minimum sentence.
Yes look at Texas.
