So you're basically saying USNews HS ranking is worthless.

The high school with the best outcomes is the one that is wealthiest and that has the most legacy parents. Because full pay, the ability to ED, and legacy status matter a lot more than McLean v Oakton vs Madison v Chantilly. If you aren’t wealthy or a legacy or a URM, Langley isn’t going to give your kid an edge over Madison. It might hurt your kid, if there are legacies in their class with similar credential who beat them out for a spot.

Your kid will see similar results from any schools in the top 1/2 of the FCPS heap.

I had a kid graduate from TJ and go non-engineering/CS STEM a kid from the top of a base school who also applied with a humanities focus They each got admitted to the school the other kid attended and had a very similar range of options. Which was fine. The TJ kid wasn’t there for a college admissions bump.

Because I saw the end of year college destinations Saxon Scope. Excellent schools, as usual. You can move along and troll elsewhere.

Yes. US News rankings are built on flawed methodology. Admittedly there is no perfect ranking system, but US News is essentially meaningless. It's embarrassing that even FCPS posted a US News ranking article on their website bragging about some of their top HS rankings like Langley and McLean while at the same time owning some schools at the bottom of the list like Mt. Vernon. It's a farce.

The ideal ranking would measure the progress kids make at a school, not the absolute achievement levels.

However, no one has come up with that system, and in terms of a more conventional approach services like US News and Niche do a reasonably good job.

You are right that FCPS only mentions these rankings when they think it is in Gatehouse’s interests to do so, such as when they are under attack for declining SAT scores across the entire county. They certainly don’t do it because they want to acknowledge the efforts of the administrators, teachers, students, and parents at schools like Langley and McLean.
