Sending you love, OP. It’s not an easy task, but I believe sometimes our purpose on earth is to teach others how to be better people. You obviously made at least one young lady think twice about her behavior (and she is probably rethinking her friend group). There will be a ripple effect. Good came out of this because of you. You positively impacted society. You may have impacted this young lady’s life more profoundly than you realize.

In my 60s I needed some extra $ & got a part-time job at a famous big-box store. Groups of teen boys. Would wander around throwing merchandise we just straightened up & occasionally making fun of the several older guys who were working there. Shameless jerks. Parents are doing a crappy job of raising their kids these days.

They won’t believe it happened, or they’ll think it was a misunderstanding. Sadly, I’ve seen this. Even the parents who know how rotten their kids can be will defend them.

I'd tell them to enjoy their youth while it lasts, as in a blink of an eye they will ancient like me. With a warning that carrying around shame and regret for past behavior ages one faster. When they eventually get around to maturing they will come to understand how hurtful their words and actions are to others.

Middle schoolers are the worst. I have one ultra-courteous child who is now an adult who was never rude at that age, and one 13 year old who has her moments of unbelievable rudeness! I need to constantly remind her that other people's feelings matter, and that she can't just open her mouth and say the first "fun" remark that comes out. They might be fun to say, but they're not fun to hear.

I'm so sorry, OP. If one girl apologized, I'm sure the others felt bad too, but were too ashamed to face you.

Damage the cars in some way. I figured people would go nuts if it was suggested even joking someone ram their cars. The Clueless reference isn't exactly on point either b/c in the movie it was known that Cher was a virgin and a bad driver. OP knows nothing about these teens. It was a low blow that might not even make sense here since we're going to split hairs and all.

Exactly. Yesterday I saw a bunch of boys joy riding with a grocery store cart, generally goofing off with it. I walked up to them and told them to put the cart back where it belonged. They looked surprised that anyone cared, but immediately obeyed. Three minutes later, a woman thanked me. She said she should have said something to them, but was too afraid.

I told her that I care, and sometimes caring needs to be an action, not just a feeling.

Most of these kids are neglected at home. They’ll do whatever it takes until someone pays attention to them.


Goofing off with a grocery store cart sounds pretty harmless to me.

They took it off store property, so was actual theft. I guess you’ve never seen one of those things flip when not used correctly. I prefer to speak up if I see something wrong, and I can help stop it. But you do you.

Same! I’d tell my daughter I was straight up ashamed of her and that she broke my heart. I know her and that would get to her. You have to shame and guilt young people out of this, it’s the only way some of them will get their heads out of their asses.

You should have told the lifeguard they were harassing you and gotten them kicked out. Next step is to tell the club owner or membership board so that their parents can be informed.
