You cannot get much smaller than our house and we have a 25 year old car...middle class aren't taking expensive vacations. You aren't middle class. Middle class are worried about paying the mortgage and groceries.

Now we do; it's not worth having an expensive vacation, and the only one we take during the whole year, ruined by germy kids.

If it was just a cheaper short vacation that we could cancel easily, I wouldn't care and would not isolate.

If this is an expensive vacation we've been saving for and planning, I definitely isolate as much as possible for a week pre trip.

The point is I’m not sure her over- caution is even working. My family doesn’t do a single thing to prevent ilness or worry about it. Some of us have never even gotten Covid, the ones who did had it once and once only. OP could probably loosen up.

I don't do isolate before a trip and do think it's extreme. If it works for you, great. Maybe next time just say you have other plans and can't come (your plans are that you are isolating).

But your friend is a serious jerk if she's not speaking to you over a child's birthday party. So honestly I would move on from this friendship.

We absolutely do this before a big trip. Agree with PP--can't afford to skip a trip that's paid for and we only take one a year that isn't camping or visiting relatives (if that--some years we *only* take those sort of trips). We aren't hermits, but we do mask at school/work and on the Metro and avoid indoor birthday party spots, etc.

I would just have told the party person that we had another commitment, though, because I fully expect others to think we're weird. I just don't care.

Well, good news for you is the strep is no big deal as long as they’ve been on antibiotics for 24 hours. The stomach bug can shed via poop up to two weeks though. Hopefully all those kids are good hand washers!!

I don’t do this but a client recently pulled his kid from daycare the week before a trip so you’re not the only one. I have used an upcoming trip as an excuse not to go into the office the week before.

A party I went to this weekend had so many people standing around talking about the horrible stomach bug that had been going around their school the week before. And then others were chiming in about strep also circulating in the group. A couple people turned down alcohol because "still on antibiotics for that strep my kids gave me."

I guess they thought it was okay to come since the kids were at the same school as the host family?

My kids may have been the only ones at a different school and it was so hard to not grab them immediately and run for the door.

So maybe I'll take your lead, op, when we have a big trip coming up.

Right? In my experience, those that are over the top germaphobes have had Covid the most. We are not huge germaphobes and only one family member has had Covid and it was akin to allergies for about 24 hours.

Not weird. We are taking a huge vacation this summer that I spent a ton of money on. The week before we'll likely lay low. I cannot cancel or change any dates, and cannot lose the money.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

DP and you sound paranoid. This has happened to us more than once. We got it on vacation, at the resort. It’s horrible but happens. Do you isolate once you get to your vacation too?

When it’s happened to us, it’s been our one and only vacation for the year. My point is that we always caught it on vacation. I think you are far more likely to get sick there unless your vacation is in isolation at a beach house. Ours are not. I don’t spend my life worrying about what we might catch.


That sucks that happened to your family. Of course children can always catch something while on the vacation. But if you can mitigate the chances of illness even a little bit, what’s the harm in it? So what if they miss out on a trampoline park party 1 week out of the year. They’ll be fine!


+1 I’ll happily skip a birthday party to lessen the chance of having a kid with GI issues on a long flight.
