One year I put out a selection of items color-themed to match the party and invited everyone to choose three. Bubble wands, balloons, pencils, candy, lip balms, and the like.

I’ve also been to a party with a mini candy bar. Each kid got a sack and two scoops’ worth.

Yeah - sunglasses and 5 Below toys are all junk. You think they're "cute summer toys" but really, they're cheap pieces of plastic junk. Candy is really the way to go.

I was at a party and they gave out one mini squish mallow in a gift bag - it was a huge hit. Buy a bunch at 5 below.

My DD would like a fidget or a notebook and smelly pens.

Blind bag Lego minifig
Any kind of tiny plush or plush on a keyring
Water bottle/laptop stickers (or was my 7yo only into those bc she has an older sister?)
If you have a Polaroid camera, a snapshot from the party
Tiny notebook with tiny colored pencils or pens
Fancy wrapped cookie, cake pop, or rice krispie treat

This is a good list.

The kids at my son's school love keychains to clip to their backpacks.

And some cases like these:

Then you could have some stickers and acrylic paint pens for the kids to decorate their cases.

Could be a cute idea but not uv-rated so bad for little developing eyes. Pass.

Then get these:

Many of the reviews mention giving them as party favors. And if a parent prefers different glasses the case can be used for any pair of sunglasses.

These are cute and might actually be used.

if you're thinking sweets then a custom cookie is fun. You could also buy a divided plastic box and fill with different candy

+1 In my experience kids don't appreciate gift cards for the types of things their parents usually buy them anyway (like chic fila).

-$5 gift cards to ChikFilA or an ice cream shop (any other ideas for $5 gift cards?)
-Nice chapsticks
-Those TY beanie boos with big eyes.
-some sort of arts and crafts kit like a make your own bracelet
-nail polish
-books (this is what I've done in the past. Like a Junie B Jones goes to 1st grade. But now I'm stumped on books that they wouldn't already have)

I haven't read all the comments but we did "Who Would Win" books, they were under $5 each and are a big hit for this age! Everyone loved them!

We would love the macaroons. And to fulfill the need for junk, you can add a balloon. I also like the idea of pens because you could actually get nice ones for under $5.
