I don't understand how this absolutely stunning woman, who radiates on a movie screen, always sort of looks washed out and blah in event photos? Can someone explain to me?

Its cute, sexy and elegant at the same time.

Its a top, not much of a dress but craftsmanship is great and she is beautiful.

Oh I like this, want to see the full thing.
Most of what I have seen looks unusually boring this year. You can only look at so many black and white outfits incorporating the same few elements (pearls, lace, flowers) before it's a big yawn. But Hathaway is the only one I've seen wearing that Chanel tweed, only reimagined in a very Lagerfeld-esque way as evening wear with some risqué elements. And her hair and makeup is exciting in context, even if it's just Amy Winehouse drag.
wow, so surprised she didn't do a red lip, which is kind of her signature. way to dial it back, AH!

The fabric piecing/tone on tone selection is really amazing artisanship. One of the things I like about the Met Gala is that it's often a chance to see really amazing couture with fantastic craftsman ship (thinking of Rhianna's yellow cape or pretty much everything that got worn during the "Heavenly Bodies" year). This is a nice example of that on a person I've never heard of:
Idk who she is but dress is beautiful and she wore it well.
